elderly woman with jaw pain

It’s estimated that over 10 million Americans experience some sort of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction, which is characterized by problems impacting the jaw joint. Specifically, the TMJ connects the jaw to bones on the side of the head, thereby allowing for speaking, chewing, yawning and more activities.

Nobody knows for sure what causes TMJ dysfunction, but factors like facial injuries, misaligned teeth and teeth grinding are all possible triggers of such issues. The good news is that TMJ pain is, for the most part, reversible with today’s treatments – that is, if the pain from the dysfunction doesn’t go away on its own first, which is common. What’s more is that there are a bevy of home remedies for TMJ dysfunction that can go a long way in minimizing pain and other symptoms. Here’s a closer look at some of these home remedies:

  • Avoid overuse of jaw muscles: The best way to avoid the pain and other symptoms associated with TMJ pain is to refrain from overusing the jaw muscles. To do this, focus on eating soft foods and avoid anything that’s sticky and chewy, like candy, gum, caramel, etc.
  • Stretching/massaging: Sometimes, all your jaw needs is a bit of TLC. Consult with your doctor or your dentist about how to properly stretch or massage your jaw muscles. Not only can this help these muscles feel better, but it can also help strengthen them.
  • Heat/cold treatment: What do you do if you’ve got a bruise that’s swelling? Ice it to get the swelling down, of course! The same can apply with your TMJ pain – a little bit of hot or cold applied to the area can help alleviate the pain and reduce any swelling.
  • Jaw exercises: Along the lines of the stretching/massaging item from earlier, jaw exercises can help build strength in the muscles and overcome TMJ dysfunction. Consult with your dentist on the best exercises to help you with these issues.
  • Over-the-counter medication: Perhaps the easiest, most convenient way to battle TMJ dysfunction is to take some over-the-counter pain relievers if the pain becomes too much.
  • Relieve stress: While the verdict is still out on what exactly causes TMJ issues, it’s believed that stress is a major factor. With this in mind, eliminating stress can also help eliminate TMJ pain for many individuals. To help eliminate stress, practice relaxation exercises. Do some yoga, set aside some quiet time each day – whatever you have to do to relax your mind and body.

TMJ dysfunction may be painful, but it doesn't have to be debilitating. We already mentioned that many people grow out of or overcome TMJ issues over time. For those that don't, medical or dental intervention may be necessary - but there are also ways that people can resolve TMJ issues at home as well.
